The Ultimate Franchise Checklist – The Fun Way to Your Future!
The Ultimate Franchise Checklist – The Fun Way to Your Future!
Thinking about buying a franchise?
That’s a big step! It’s super exciting, but also a little scary (and that’s okay).
To make sure you’re making the right move, you’ll need a checklist to guide you – like a treasure map, but for your business adventure.
Don’t worry, ServiceMaster UK is here to help!
Here’s the ultimate checklist to help you pick the perfect franchise for you:
1. Money Matters
How much does it cost to start?
Check the price tag on everything: the franchise fee, equipment, and anything else you’ll need to kick things off.
Then, look at ongoing costs like royalties (a small cut of what you earn) and advertising fees. Make sure you’re clear about what’s included in the fee—no surprises!
2. A Famous Name
Is the franchise brand well-known?
Think about how customers see it. Does the name make people smile?
A strong, trusted brand (like ServiceMaster UK!) makes your job way easier because people already love it.
3. Help is on the Way
Does the franchisor (the boss of the franchise) give you training and support?
You’ll want to know what kind of help you’ll get at the start and if they’ll be there for you later.
ServiceMaster UK, for example, has your back every step of the way – Each of our brands [ServiceMaster Clean, Rosemary Bookkeeping, Merry Maids, ServiceMaster Restore and TruGreen) provide incoming Franchise Partners with a 2 week Franchise Partner Academy combined with regular ongoing Workshops, Development Sessions, Seminars and Conferences.
4. Read the Rules
The franchise agreement is like the rulebook for your business.
How long does it last? Can you change anything? Know what you’re signing up for—boring, but important!
5. Where You’ll Be
Location is key!
Think about where your customers are and check out the competition nearby.
Does the franchisor help you pick the best spot? Location is incredibly important to the success of your Franchise, and before you commit to a lease you need to have confidence the location is right for your business both now and into the future.
6. The Plan Works
A good franchise has a solid business plan. Are there clear steps to follow?
What about updates and new ideas? Make sure the franchise is built for success now and in the future.
7. What Others Say
Talk to current and past franchisees.
They’ll give you the real scoop—what’s awesome and what’s tricky.
At ServiceMaster UK, we’re proud of our happy franchise partners and make introductions for prospective franchise partners to hear directly from those that are already in the Network.
8. Follow the Money
Is the franchisor financially healthy? Check if they’re investing in the brand and supporting their franchisees.
You want a partner who’s in it for the long haul, having traded in the UK for over 60 years and since 1929 in the US, it’s fair to say ServiceMaster are in it for the long haul.
9. Your Turf
Will you have your own territory?
Make sure you’re not sharing customers with another franchisee down the road.
Ask how your Franchisor will define your area and what protections you’ll have.
10. Stay Legal
Are there any legal hiccups?
Double-check that the franchise follows all the rules and has a clean record.
11. The Exit Plan
One day, you might want to sell your franchise.
Understand how that works and if the franchisor helps with the process. Planning ahead is always smart!
Good Luck on Your Journey!
We hope this checklist makes your franchise adventure fun and stress-free.
Remember, your gut might tell you what feels right, but your checklist will make sure it is right.
